Ever since a tantalizing ten seconds of a present-day Matthew Broderick as Ferris Bueller hit the web last week, speculation over “Super Bowl or Sequel” started spreading like wildfire. And then yesterday morning when the full spot was revealed I was all: “Oh, I am ALL OVER Ferris Bueller today”. But I never expected a two minute super bowl commercial to take me on such an emotioncoaster. I was elated. I was nauseated. I mean…I’ve written for campaigns that have had less of an effect on me.

So here I am 24 hours later still staring at my blank posting screen in kind of confused horror? (Yes…that’s a question…I’m still not totally clear on how I feel here.)

I’m gonna need you guys to talk this one out with me.

On the one hand, I DO like to feel like I’m in on the joke, and it was fun to see that Ferris Bueller still lives in Matthew Broderick. He’s one of the greatest characters of all time (YES HE IS, and I went to film school you guys, so I totally know about movies.) But on the other, much larger, more slapping-me-in-the-face hand…MAY JOHN HUGHES FOREVER HAUNT YOU IN YOUR DREAMS, HONDA ADVERTISING PEOPLE.

I’m actually really not that snobby about very many things. But when it comes to the residents of Shermer, Illinois? I’m so snobby that I have to refer to them by the obscure fictional town from which they hail. I’m of the generation that counts Jake Ryan as Prince Charming, and John Bender as James Dean. Because it’s true.

Anyway, Honda is touting over two dozen movie references in the Todd Phillips (Old School, The Hangover) directed spot, and encouraging fans to tweet finds with the hashtag #dayoff. See for yourself:

I mean, it reeks of sell-outery, but I’ve never been one to judge a creative professional for trying to make a buck. Still, I dunno…it left me feeling kind of empty or something. Am I just too pretentious for words? Or is it possible that deep down in my pop culture loving heart Ferris Bueller maybe meant more to me than a CR-V and a couple of cheap laughs?

(Also I don’t know about you but I could have probably been singing a different tune if we got to see Jennifer Grey and Charlie Sheen making out on a bench somewhere.)

Inviting all your friends over to watch Bridesmaids, which, unless you live under a rock you probably know was just released on DVD (unrated version included.) At least, that’s what I figured when the folks over at Universal asked me if I wanted to get a little pre-release action in order to get my girls nite on and then tell you all about it here so you’ll want to go out and see Bridesmaids and get your girls nite’s on too. The silly part is, Bridesmaids? It’s so fucking funny, you don’t need me or anyone else to tell you to see it! It’s everything I’ve always dreamed of doing in a “chick flick” and I want to hug each and every member of the production team and cast for collectively opening the minds of every development executive in Hollywood. All of a sudden, GIRLS CAN MAKE MOVIES (and TV shows too – New Girl anyone?) and well – all of that, and the stock of bachelorette party gear in my bar, was reason enough for me to say “yeah – send that shit over!”

Sometimes, as an embittered screenwriter it’s hard for me to compliment other movies. But this one is..deep breath…totally relatable and totally hilarious– from the opening goodness with Jon Hamm to the onset of food poisoning at a bridal salon a’la Say Yes tot he Dress.

And then Missoni crashed Target. It would seem unrelated, but it delayed our Bridesmaids Shipments by days and I was left with very few options for my Bridesmaids Shindig. Except for the best option, which was inviting our only coupled-but-not-married friends over for Tacos and Penis Drinks and talk ad nauseum about their future wedding. WHICH IS NOT AN ACTUAL WEDDING – Randi would like to be very clear that there’s still no ring on it…Adam.) I kid. I mostly kid.

{Randi and Adam who are hating me so much right now, but c’mon you guys – you got to watch Bridesmaids Unrated early!}

Anyway – it was a fun-as-hell way for us to spend a Saturday night. Randi herself was one of my Bridesmaids so she saw me at my bridal worst, while Scott and I got to heckle our buddies for what the future may hold…and then douse them in Yellow Tail Bubbly just for kicks (no one got doused – my furniture is mostly vintage and very fragile. But it would have been cool if we did, huh?)

Have you seen the movie that unseated SATC as the top grossing chick flik of all time? A movie that actually seems to have trasnscended chick flik and made it straight to comedy? What did you think?

The All About Eve poster that hung in my college dorm room, in it's current place of honor next to the toasting flutes from our wedding.

It’s a question I’ve grown to dread. I’m never ready for it. No matter how long I’ve been at this gig, no matter how many times I’ve been left feeling like a philistine deer in judge-y headlights, the question catches me so off guard:

What are your top five favorite movies of all time?

When you come up as a lackey in the film industry, it’s standard interview fodder for the first several years of your career. Back in ’03 when I was taking the mailroom tour of Beverly Hills, I had a well-rehearsed answer with films that weren’t necessarily my five favorites, but that I was pretty sure would make me look smart and cultured (“I really love the abstract symbolism in Un Chien Andalou…”) Because no one ever sees through that approach.

But I’m not a young lackey any more. I’m a nasty, jaded life-hater now, and I don’t give a crap what you think my top five favorite movies say about me. So to kick off A Month of Movies — or MOM as I’m about to affectionately start calling it — I’m going to tackle the tough questions and let my iffy taste flap out there in the wind for all to see. I’m also totally kidding about not caring what you think. Please love me, okay?

{Note: For the month of February, I’m hosting a MONTH OF MOVIES on BlogHer. If you love movies like I do, you should come visit me over there and join in the fun. Where FUN = you write your own post about a favorite movie/director/actor/genre/anything related to movies at ALL and then send me an email and I feature it as part of the series! See, fun, right?!}

Here they are, in order of awesomeness:

1. All About Eve

This one’s a no brainer. The 1950 Best Picture Oscar Winner has topped my list since high school. Bette Davis as Margot Channing is one of the baddest-ass performances of all time. “Fasten your seatbelts…it’s going to be a bumpy night.” Also, it’s making it’s blu-ray debut TODAY.. What are the odds? An Affair to Remember hits Blu-ray today too — for the Sleepless in Seattle fans out there.

2. The Breakfast Club

I’m limiting myself to a single John Hughes movie for the purposes of this list, because I could easily use up every slot and then some with the late director’s generation-defining body of work. Despite having very strong feelings for Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club will always have a special place in my heart as the first Brat Pack flick I ever saw. Thanks to my then-12-year-old older sister for introducing me to everything cool.

3. The Princess Bride

It’s one of the greatest movies ever made. Yes it is, and you know it. If you haven’t seen it, I hope you weren’t born in the 80s, because if you were, you should be ashamed of yourself. I’m sticking to my one film per director rule on this one too, and giving When Harry Met Sally honorable mention for being the greatest romantic comedy of all time.

4. The Usual Suspects

“Shatthafaahkaap.” This movie rules. It rules all over the place, and Keyser Soze will forever hold his place in the Pop Culture vernacular. Brilliant cast, brilliant director, brilliant pretty much everything.

5. The Music Never Stopped

This movie just ousted Heathers as a top fiver when I caught the premiere at Sundance last week. Based on the Oliver Sacks case study “The Last Hippie,” it was somewhere between the music of Bing Crosby and The Grateful Dead that I had to stop worrying about how crazy I looked to the people behind me, and just give over to the full-body sobs this bittersweet love story between Father and Son brought over me.

So that’s it. My real official top five all time favorites (okay eight, and I’m going to go ahead and mention 12 Monkeysand Cry Baby too, because I’m a full blown film geek and I can’t control myself).

So now you go. What are YOUR top five favorite movies of all time?
