The boy turns three tomorrow, but watching Sara expertly wrangle her two little men while managing to serve the six-layer rainbow cake she made from scratch while remodeling her bathroom (no, seriously) — you’d think she’d been at this Mom business for a hell of a lot longer.
Sara is the kind of gracious, calm, collected, ready-before-the-guests-arrive, hostess that I could only ever dream of being. This weekend, we celebrated the oldest boy of the new generation that seems to be popping up around our group of friends lately, and Sara did it in true mind-blowing Sara fashion, by bringing out the craziest ass technicolor dream cake I’ve ever laid eyes on. [Except for, of course, the photos Keeley sent of Winter's equally-stunning technicolor cake from her second birthday party in New York a few weeks ago, which apparently Dashiell saw online and insisted on having one of his own, so his Mama obliged...but holy crap do pictures not quite get across how incredible this cake is.]
Oh, and then no big deal, but she also hand-knit the cutest little monsters ever to pass out as party favors, but not before she put them to work as the stars of Dash’s very own stop-motion birthday video ~
And did I mention that Sara also has a newborn? (The very same handsome guy she gave birth to in her dining room back in December…remember?) So yeah…if she weren’t like the greatest friend in the world, I would totally hate her.
Oh, and Dashy’s badass crown was handmade by the lovely Audrey because “every kid needs a crown on their birthday.” I like your style, Audrey.
{also, I shamelessly stole that photo of Dash and the work-in-progress from Sara’s facebook page to complete this post. I was a little bit fixated on the cake once it came out.}
And also this -

ummmm, that monster video is AMAZING.
LOVE the cake and monster favors…wow!
Oh, I love rainbow cakes. Now I want to make one for no reason at all.
Wow, that cake puts the rest of us baked goods-making mamas to shame.
I know, right? I feel like the birthday party gauntlet has been thrown! ; )
I want to lick the screen that cake looks so good.
ummm, from scratch? no. betty crocker, love. see? supermommy i am not.
Well, phew then. Betty makes one hell of a cake. And you are still supermommy.
OMG. o_O
Love the cake and HOW did she do that video?! AWESOME.
She’s clever like that. Over 500 still frames, and I believe some gaffers tape.
