Look Out Music City! I’m Here Now and I Ain’t Never Leavin!

Okay…I’m actually on the plane somewhere over New Mexico I think…and since I left Scott and Dee back in LA, I’d say the chances of me not returning are slim to none, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to shout that phrase from the top of the Opryland Hotel tonight in honor of my favorite (yes, even more favorite than Running On Empty) River Phoenix flick The Thing Called Love.

Set in Nashville, directed by Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show) and featuring both a pre-fame Sandra Bullock and Dermot Mulroney opposite Samantha Mathis and River Phoenix’s star crossed music lovers — I swear this is one of the 90′s most underrated films.  With one of the 90′s most underrated soundtracks.

And legitimately one of my all time favorites.  Scott may or may not have bought me an identical black acoustic/electric Stratocaster for my 20th birthday, and I may or may not have taught myself Miranda Presley’s (Mathis’) heartfelt anthem BIG DREAM.

Okay, I totally did.

Anyway – en route to Music City for the first time in my life, I’ve been running this country-tune-loving grunge-era classic on a loop all week and was pained to discover that Memphis and Graceland are probably too far for a day trip while I wait for my flight home on Sunday.  But The Thing Called Love is loaded on my iPad.

If I think back to high school, it was this and then EMPIRE RECORDS that we watched, and listened to the soundtracks from, on loop from 93-96.

Just when I think I couldn’t crush on you any harder, you go and reference The Thing Called Love. I mean, really!?!? I think my sister and I wore out our VHS tape of this movie from watching (& singing along) daily.

Now I am off to buy the soundtrack on iTunes. Have fun in Music City!!

My love for this movie is my shame-filled secret. Just yesterday I looked for the soundtrack on spotify. No dice.
