Turn Turn Turn

US2014

It’s amazing really how fast time goes. And with every new year comes new ideals about how we’re going to change our lives for the better. The thing is as I’ve gotten older those ideals because actions more and more. Not all of them. Never all of them. But some of them. Sometimes. Because it means more. There’s more at stake.

Sometimes I look at my urban townie life, married to my high school sweetheart living a block from the soda machines we met at two miles from the house I grew up in, living at least bits and pieces of a life I once dreamed of, and I wonder how I got here. Or more precisely how it happened so fast and when my parents are going to ground me for being 12 years past curfew.

I don’t make resolutions any more. But I do like to use January 1st as a jumping off point for some things. Like this year I want to re-tackle a photo a day (last year I made it through Marchbut I’m going to do it more slowly. No daily posting. No rules. Just me taking a photo a day that I’m happy with.

This year I’m going to be more deliberate in my decisions. I’m going to slow down. I’m going to trust myself. This year I’m going to try to focus my creativity where it belongs. This year I’m going to throw the map away and follow the road less traveled. This year I’m going to find a way to balance this crazy ride called life, and not just be exhausted while it whips past me at breakneck speed. This year…

Sometimes my creativity gets ahead of me and I can’t catch up. Sometimes projects stall. Sometimes real life seems like such a burden. But sometimes I’m afraid if I pinch myself I’ll wake up and THAT, friends and lurkers, would be the real nightmare. Happy 2014. I’m glad we’re on this crazy train together. As the great Bette Davis once said (as written by Joseph L. Mankiewicz): “Fasten your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.”

Housekeeping: My apologies for not having announced a winner for Mischievous Mensch yet. That will happen ASAP. Holidays get crazy, apparently.
